On Acting The Song

To Sing or Not to Sing

To Sing or Not To Sing:

Are the audition conferences (UPTA, SETC, any others that are still kicking) worthwhile for actors who aren't musical theater focused? If not, should I sing in my audition when I'm not that much of a singer? I can carry a tune and act through song, but I'm not going to be belting to the rafters, and I know the talent pool is full of excellent singers.

Dear Sing or Not to Sing,

The time-old question, “Are you an actor who sings? Or a singer who acts? …Or hey, maybe the next Audra?” Or is it okay to be an actor who has no interest in leading with singing?

My first question is, are you interested in getting the same kinds of jobs and opportunities as the many “excellent singers” that you’re thinking of? Or, do you simply want to put yourself in a position to be seen for the work that is best for you? As you stated, there is a type of storytelling that can be accomplished through song, even if you don’t deem yourself the most excellently trained & capable singer. What I was taught and have since reminded myself of again and again is that song is a beautiful way for an actor to showcase their vulnerability, bravery, and vocal expressivity. If you can still tell a story through song, that can be your aim at these conferences. Less about, “Am I able to compete with these other singers?” and more so, “Are there companies and collaborators I want to share my work with? And what in a song best showcases what I can do?”

In many audition processes as actors, we can try and play both sides of the table, when really, we have no idea what any of the directors, casting directors, or program representatives are looking for in their entirety. They may see a million big belters that day, but fundamentally might be looking for earnestness, humor, or a POV that they find undeniable, but can’t quite articulate until they see it. And yes, unfortunately, many theater conferences and industry access spaces have diminished over the years. Making the conferences that remain rare opportunities. I would encourage you to name your goals and needs first when considering any opportunity. Then, regardless of who else is auditioning, YOU choose if you see the benefit of sharing your work in those spaces and circumstances based on your goals.

So, my advice? Sing the song to the best of your ability. Get the support where you know you need it (whether it be a coach, teacher, friend, or YouTube university). Accept what you know you can grow in and rigorously work for that growth. Trust what you said about yourself. “I can act through song.” Which means, hold yourself accountable to telling a fully lived story and dynamic experience to the absolute best of your ability. Choose a song that has a clear relationship and compelling journey, within your musical comfort zone.

Best of luck,

-Fefu
